I knew one, once, who was trained to relieve himself outdoors. In the snow. He was a unique case, though.
A dog, on the other hand, can be trained to go outside, and may be eager to do so. He will defend the pack. He will also bring you something you want, like the newspaper, rather than something he thinks will impress you, like a dead mouse.
Kitties can be cute, but are not on my short list of Useful Animals. But I don't own a farm.
