As Stephen J Gould pointed out in many of his writings--and as Lee suggests--nature has no plan. Extinction vs continuation is determined as much by a roll of the dice as by adaptation.
To paraphrase Gould, you can be the most highly adapted fish in the water, but if your pond dries up around you, you're toast.
The passing of any species isn't part of a predetermined script, so imho the re-introduction of a species wouldn't spoil anyone's "grand scheme." Recreating extinct species would be a most remarkable accomplishment. What we'd learn in the process, and from the study of the resulting animals, would be staggering.
Having said that, if a dinosaur ate one of my cats, I'd be plenty peeved. :-)
