It depends

My yard here never has been a muddy mess after a heavy snow. It's so dry here most of the time that the yard absorbs a lot of moisture. Now, the roads are a real mess as snow melts. Dirty slush gets all over everyone's cars. It makes for great business for those who own car washes. Make sure you have a lot of windshield washer fluid, too, and be careful when the roads freeze overnight.

When I was stationed in Nebraska back in 1980-82, we had a very hard winter (81-82), supposedly the worst in 80 years. It was bitterly cold with a lot of snow. When the snow finally melted, the yard was very muddy. We then had what seemed like weeks of rain that spring. My grass kept growing but it was way too wet to mow. It literally got knee high and there was nothing I could do about it. My landlord finally ended up mowing it with a bushhog (full sized tractor and mower). That wasn't the worst of it, either. The water flooded hundreds of skunk burrows, forcing the animals out where they were ran over. Just like the old song ("Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road"), the place stank to high heaven.

The worst of it seems over, at least for the time being. My wife didn't have to go to work after all.
