Sarkozy, the french interior minister, went to meet with the Muslim representatives in their first meeting.
He was applauded and booedat the same time.
Booed because they don't seem to accept that women must remove their veil when an identity picture of them is taken (practically the only time when the Republic says they must do it).
Over here, we have a picture on our ID card, our Driver's Licence and also in my American Passport.
One of the muslims said not to wear the veil is like forcing jews to show the yellow star.
That's quite off line!
OTOH, jews often wear a kippa. Does it show in identity pictures? I'm sure it is so discreet that it doesn't make a difference and because it's the face that matters, it never was an issue.
Now, the veil doesn't necessarily hide the face, but mainly the hair.
I'm sure some kind of compromise will be found.
