This is a cmpletely insincere demand by muslim extremists, in the opinion of most.
It is also evidence of the ratchet effect of Islam:
Moslems arrive in a country demanding freedom of religion and tolerance until they reach a critical mass. Then they start demanding that everyone start obeying their religious requirements for how a society be shaped, often up to andincluding Sharia, the medieval mysogynistic version of Islam.
Then when the large groups of non-moslems protest this imposition on their religious and civil freedom, the Islamists 'defend' Islam by killing as many non-mislems as possible.
This is happening in Phillipines, Sudan, Nigeria, and the french in Europe had better wake up.
