So the Hawai'ian Islands "trigger" an effect *from* the Asian mainland that extends all the way to Hawai'i.

How about the islands just get in the way of an oceanographic phenonomenon that extends far enough to cover them? (and would occur whether they were there or not).

Less sexy, less news worthy. More true, more science.
