How fast would Mars loose an atmosphere?

I'm not real sure that Mark is right in his fervent hope that Mars would retain a man made atmosphere for millions of years -

As Mars has not much of a magnetic field to divert the solar wind, my suspicion is that any atmosphere created would be blown away quite rapidly -
