Re: How fast do you want...

People who do computer aided design need faster computers, particularly for 3D modelling. When a 3D model has hundreds of features, each dimensioned with at least 4-6 constraints, the computer really bogs down. For every change made to the part the computer has to update the entire database of vertices, lines, polygons, trimmed lines, depth sort, parametric curves, bezier surfaces, extruded distances, intersections, vector names, and so on... its really slow.

In addition if I want to make my 3D model accessible by someone else's software I have to translate all that geometry to IGES format, and just to give you an example: a 3D modelling file that takes up 20 Megabytes on the hard drive in its original format will inflate to 90 Megabytes as an IGES file. The translation to the different format will take 3-4 hours with a PIII 550 machine. If you need to send the part to a company that does FEA or CFD analysis and you have more than one variation of the part it is easy to see that you will need to take an entire work day just to translate a couple parts to IGES format. A decent speed IMO would be at least 13-14 Gigahertz. Then I could do IGES translations in under 10 minutes. If they can increase the speed of communication, ie IGES translation, then who knows what will happen.
