If you go to "encyclopedia astronautica", at astronautix.com,
there's an article there on the fact that two Proton-class rockets were intended to send two robotic missions to Mars in 1969...One booster blew up on the launch pad, creating a hazmat
"contamination zone" that prevented the launch of the other Mars-rocket in 1969.
