I've been on some cruises (Holland America)and have been impressed at the safety procedures on the ships I've been on. I witnessed the crew rescue 21 refugies whose boat sank (or not)in open water in a quick and professional manner.
According to the cruise line, each cruise has specific way-points and routes that are followed unless there is an emergency or a need to avoid weather.
I too an confused as to why the ship rolled to the opposite side; unless the submerged side is even more damaged than the one with the rock sample.
