It is a known fact merchant captains often put the ship on autopilot while in mid-ocean and there may be no one on the bridge or on lookout duty at all. They don't like paying overtime to the crew.
Cruising solo sailors are always afraid they'll be run over by a big ship while they're sleeping. It's happened often enough.
