<History does not support your ideas. The PC you work on would not be possible without the integrated circuit developed by NASA.
NASA did not "develop" the integrated circuit, although along with the military, they were an important early customer for them, which indeed did spur the development. This is not proof that no commercial development would ever have taken place, and it is obvious that the vast majority of growth in the industry has been commercially-driven
Weather sats would not be in existence without rocket technology. How many failed rocket launches occured in the late 50s and through the 60s? Far more than the free market would have paid for that's for sure.
It is intriguing, if a little pointless, to speculate on how space history might have developed had the government not taken it over. Goddard's research was privately funded until WWII. Before that, the government ignored him. Who knows? In a more peaceful and more free world, maybe orbital spaceflight would have eventually developed from an extension of hypersonic intercontinental commercial transports instead of intercontinental nuclear missiles. Without the government, would we have gotten to the Moon in 1969? Almost certainly not. But when we did finally get there, it would have been for a reason and it would have been to stay. But again, this kind of speculation is pointless.
Although a cynic might say that private rocket launches may have suffered fewer failures than government programs that were both rushed and saddled with loads of political baggage.
You can argue the point all you like but you are exactly analogous to the creationists insisting their point of view in the face of overwhelming evidence.
The operation of the free market is not a matter of blind faith, but constant observation of facts. Almost our entire civilization is based on privately-developed technologies and services. Government may have accelerated certain areas, but it has also certainly retarded many others.
And in most cases where both the government and the private sector have attacked the same problem at the same time, the private sector has typically blown the government's ass off. The usual result is that the government continues to pump money into whatever boondoggle it came up with to keep it alive and "competing" with the private sector alternative. The Post Office is one example of this, as is Amtrak. I'm sure others can think of their own examples.
