Faster, better, cheaper
FBC got a bum rap. Some probes were lost, but that was the whole point originally: send a bunch of cheap stuff so that losses could be absorbed, instead of a few, huge, multi-billion dollar probes. Granted we lost some Mars missions, but you will note that plans are already in the works to pick up the slack, including some probes already in progress.
