Re: How did MirCorp lose any money on the tourist flight?

Fairly easily; because MirCorp was never set up as a profitable enterprise & had no commercial investment... only a tax haven sugar daddy writing off his support against USAmerican taxable income.

In effect, they only agented for Energiya (who quickly found that they could do the job better themselves); so that their cut on purchased flights wasn't as big as a simplistic number crunch would suggest... also to keep Mir when the Russians couldn't afford it, they had to pay for a number of expensive supply flights for the one paying customer they actually attracted. Given the financing arrangement, MirCorp would have struggled to make money on a one tourist/one supply flight ratio; but the absence of a real market mean that the real ratio was likely to remain at 1/3-4 & eventually even the Russians could see that this nonsense was unsustainable (which was why MirCorp was shown the gate).

As i said: a real investment plan includes all servicing costs rather than mere opportunistic costs of individual flights; which is why none of these paper rockets have ever gotten past the front door of real investors.
