Maybe we can practice a few mission concepts that would work for Mars as well. One of my favorites: send propellant tankers and supply vehicles to the asteroid first, in unmanned vehicles that can get there slowly and leisurely. This allows your manned system to be more generous with propulsion and stingier on supplies, reducing trip time and vehicle mass.
