The last 5 years in Ontario and Quebec have 1 very destructive ice storm, and 1 blizzard. The former caused high-tension power lines to collapse under the weight of ice buildup. The towers just folded up like a beer can. Apparently the ability of aircraft to fly is the least we need to worry about if the winters get worse.
The second instance was a blizzard that hit Toronto, Canada in 1999. The city was buried, and the temperatures were as low as 35 below zero. Not only did we receive about 6 feet of snow when we normally receive an inch or two, but the arctic temperatures caused ice to form underneith the snowbanks, making removal difficult. Transportation stopped. The military was called in with tracked personel vehicles to replace ambulances. Nobody could get to work for 3 days. North of Toronto hardly anyone noticed because winter there is always this severe and they are fully outfitted with snow removal, sand & salt for highways, snowmobiles, shovels, and warm clothing. Toronto was totally unprepared.
If the climate changes everywhere to the same extent, I can easily see bustling cities becoming uninhabitable. Imagine all of Canada becoming uninhabitable. All the prairie farmland rendered useless for food production. Fruit orchards in the northern united states failing because of frequent frost. Increased food imports, complete destruction of the Amazon forest to meet food demands.
Inclement weather is nothing to scoff at.
