Hybrid SUV

One of the great features of an electric car is tremendous torque at low speeds. A hybrid vehicle running electric motors on the wheels with electricity generated by an internal combustion engine, also possesses this virtue. This is why diesel locomotives are built on this principle (did you know a locomotive was a hybrid vehicle?)

Now, it seems like this wide torque range would be ideal for a 4WD vehicle. I see hybrids really taking off when they are put into a nice, big SUV that can carry a lot of kids and still get great mileage. Unfortunately, up until now car companies seem to see hybrids and electrics as two-person roller skates.

I have heard that some companies are already looking into hybrid SUVs. Ford will come out with a hybrid version of the Escape, and a hybrid Dodge Durango is due in 2003.
