I'm not sure where methanol buys you anything extra. Natural gas is not any more "renewable" than gasoline, except that you can sometimes find it in areas where there isn't oil. And there are cars now that burn natural gas, or to be more specific, propane. The energy density of gasoline is very high, and will be tough to beat.
