Space/Science » in reply to How dependant are we on Moores law...?

The end to Moore's Law has been predicted for a long time

Sooner or later, we will reach physical limits on how small we can make features on semiconductors. Eventually, photolithography will give way to electron beams and other technology. Sooner or later, we'll move from relatively slow to silicon to faster compounds like Gallium Arsenide. Even then, there will one day be a point were we may no longer be able to take the existing technology any further. However, there are other technologies under development that may sidestep these issues altogether, such as photonic or quantum computing. As one era ends, another will likely begin.
