My wife has been an avid conspiracy theory buff for a very long time. She gave me the book "Pale Rider" to read. With a huge amount of skepticism I read it. It frightened me to think there might be some truth to it. I was younger then.

The whole purpose of the book was to put fear into the reader and money into the pocket of the Author and Publisher.

Amityville Horror. 1978? "True story" There was a big buzz on this one. I saw the revenue flowing from the book and then the movie and knew it was BS.

More recently the "Blair Witch".

IMO people's fears are being played upon in order to pry open their wallets.
