They make things free enterprise creates. Without the West, China would be doing little else but growing rice. China invented a lot of things. Centuries ago. Kind of like the Islamic world.
All societies go through this phase. China's urban population only surpassed its rural population this year. In the U.S., this happened around 1920. China can find eager workers because the shittiest factory job is still better and pays more than subsistence farming. That will change, just like it changed in the West. China is subject to the laws of economics too, and what they're doing won't be sustainable much longer.
I'm not sure where "progressives" can go at this point. Their most cherished belief is that the solution to the plight of the worker is a very powerful central government with rigid controls over how business is done. How's that working in China?
