DWDM has been in daily use for years by the Telecom industry. Of course they do have lotsa fibers in each cable bundle (often hundreds) but in addition they also as a matter of everyday fact send multiple independent datastreams down each single fiber with each datastream separated by about 1.5 nanometers of wavelength.
