Lord, I would love to teach there.
Unfortunately, gbaikie, NASA's been cutting its education budget for several years. I seem to recall it was about $85.0Mn in 2000, having declined over each of the preceeding two years, but I don't remember from what level. In the most recent budget it was $75.0Mn.
NASA used to support the International Space University (ISU). No longer, except for the occasional subsidised student and allowing employees to pick up a few bucks lecturing in Strasbourg or wherever the summer session is.
NASA Academies were established at five different centers over time. Now they're down to two. This summer they're looking to team up more closely with ISU to try and leverage the combined influence of the two communities. I've got a few ideas, and they've got my resume.
Having lived in Brooklyn for a number of years (FGP in the house!), I'm not shocked at all by the gist of the article. Let's hope that some progress can be made. I shudder when I think of how many brilliant young minds have been crushed in the poverty of the ghetto (or the trailer parks. Poverty is color blind).
I think I'm going to go fire up a resume...
Ad Lunam,
