Probably was a multikiloton meteor airburst.

Another Tunguska event, maybe?

1908: Siberia [MT yield]

1930: Amazon Jungle [MT yield].

1979: Indian Ocean [KT yield]?

Incidently, in May, 1952, there
was a frighteningly loud meteor airburst [probably 20-30 miles up] heard coming from above the American city of Seattle, Washington. Newspaper reports back then indicated that many in the city were frightened [Afterall, it was in the midst of the Cold War, and Joe Stalin was known to already possessed a few nukes].
That meteor airburst has been calculated to have had a yield of
somewhere between 10-100 kilotons].

Imagine if it had occurred only a mile
above Seattle, not 20-30 miles, then
one shudders to think how the late Prez Harry Truman might have reacted, thinking an American city had been nuked.
