He has always impressed me as a man of character

Ultimately, the captain is responsible for the safety of all on board the aircraft, so it's understandable that he still mourns those 114 deaths. While I firmly believe that he and his crew performed heroically to save the remaining 184 lives, I respect him even more for him still caring about those 114 deaths.

As a private pilot, I find riding on an airliner only a little more interesting than a Greyhound bus. I know the crew is much better trained than I am and that flying on an airliner is much safer than flying myself. It still doesn't matter, between the security headaches and the other hassles of airline flights, I just don't enjoy flying on airliners anymore. Like the majority of private pilots out there, I secretly harbor the fantasy of something incapaciting the crew (non-career threatening, of course) so I can get a shot at the controls. Hopefully, I'd do a better job than shown in the movie, "Airplane!" (GREAT MOVIE!)

There's an old joke that the next generation of airliners will be so automated that the cockpit crew will consist of a pilot and a dog. The pilot's job is to feed the dog, and the dog's job is to bite the pilot if he attempts to touch the controls. Needless to say, if that day ever comes, I'll stick to private planes.
