Watching the Blue Angels perform live on our local channel just now and seeing this topic is making me reply.
There are many astronaut space pilots waiting in line for the chance to pilot a shuttle. It's their dream in life to do it. Sure, they can put it on auto pilot from time to time, but I feel better knowing that there is a qualified human presence at the helm.
Isn't that what human space flight is about?
