Re: Report On Suggested NASA Priorities and Related Poll

I don't know what it is about this very small mission: http://msnbc.com/news/695620.asp Is it because the Pioneers and Voyagers didn't have a chance to do a fly by? Is it because some have already determined that there couldn't possibly be additional questions or anything else to be discovered in this outer portion of our solar system? Sure, in their own rights Mars can be exciting and so can our Moon.

I guess I'm among the few that finds questions like these to be interesting:

KBOs range in colors from gray to red, which may be clues to competing processes in the outer solar system. One possibility is that the frost on the surface of Kuiper Belt Objects gets darker and redder with exposure to energetic particles and photons from the Sun, and gray again if an impact throws up new, clean frost from below the reddened surface. The mission team wants to map the surfaces of the KBOs to understand why they show such diversity.

* The redness could also be due from incoming interstellar cosmic rays/particles(!).

Pluto may very well be similar to Triton. We don't know!

(Thank you Voyager 2 and team for bring us that photo!)

*Too hard to pick just one topic of interest offered in that poll, so I didn't vote.
