Re: Got no sleep as a 14 yr old kid...

Also 14 at the time, stayed up 48 hours straight. (first and last time) Survived by making pots of coffee at about 3:00 am. (parents were shocked when they latter discovered this fact) [sigh: "the good old days"]

The folks gave the OK to stay up, but vetoed use of the color set in the living room. (a noise issue)

Viewed the entire event in my bedroom, on a 19" Zenith black & white.

Your post stirred some memories, especially Walter & Wally, and the network real-time simulations.

I remember the Saturn V's very slow climb past the tower. The F-1's hammering the landscape, as Cronkite described the spectacle from 3 miles away, "the sound made my pant legs flap".

If I remember correctly, as the LEM began it's descent, it passed behind the Moon and there was a LOS.
During this period, CapCom continued the intentionally subdued chat on flight status, as the air steadily thickened.

When communication with the LEM was reestablished, the tone and intensity moved way up. I know it sounds dumb, but that's when it sunk in that these guys were really going to do it!

Up until the "Engine Off" it was the greatest white knuckled event of all time.
