Perhaps the correct color can be determined by the color of the air bags in the image.
The actual color of the airbags should be a yellowish to orangey color. But in this image they look white, which seems to suggest some of the red color was missing.
I found some color images of the airbags from the Pathfinder site:
Mars Pathfinder Color Images.
Images.
It is notable that the airbags don't have exactly the same color in all these images but they are generally orange to yellow. Perhaps the color variations were due to differences in light/shadow and the amount of dust in the air.
I found this web page that has images of the airbags on Earth:
Mars Pathfinder Airbags.
<a href=http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/MPF/mpf/mpfairbags.html">Link.
They show them to be yellow/orange.
Holger Isenberg is of the opinion there were blue skies on Mars. He has side by side comparisons of a released Mars Pathfinder image next to his version which he regards as color corrected:
Blue Sky and Life on Mars!
Link.
The released version has an orange sky. Holger's version has a blue sky.
The interesting thing is the airbags in the officially released version look TOO orange! In Holger's version the airbags look closer to their color as they appear on Earth.
Perhaps Holger's argument would get more attention if he didn't also have on this page pictures of the "turtles" of Mars.
