I am surprised the Star Trek writers never thought of this technology for their show. I think it is more likely to happen in the near future than their Holodecks, but I guess it is not as entertaining as the Holodecks.
Speaking of Star Trek;
I am also surprised they has never made other uses of the transporter technology in the Star Trek Universe. Think about what we could do with such technology in the medical world. You could repair a damaged body by rebuilding it using an atomic map of the persons body from when they were healthy. Delivering babies would be a breeze.
I do not foresee such technology in our near future. For such technology to work, we have to be able to turn matter into energy and then back into matter. If I was to tern my matter into energy, it would be enough energy to level a town. The energy requirements to do all of this is staggering. Then you have to be able to map every atom in a human body.
