Sorry, but three times the money is "tripled," no matter how you try and fudge it.
Can you explain to me how increasing the population by fifty percent would require three times the government spending? Does the defense department have to spend three times the money to defend fifty percent more citizens? And as far as Social Security goes, are there three times as many people over 65 as there was in 1965?
Where the hell is all that money going?
And don't try the "infrastructure" business on me. Highways mostly come out of state and gasoline taxes.
Can you explain to me how doubling per capita income--increasing the wealth of the citizen--would require the government to spend three times as much money? By any stretch of logic, a wealthier citizenry should require LESS government services and wealth redistribution.
A richer nation should need LESS from the government, not more.
I think what you are trying to imply is that because the population and wealth have increased, that we can tax more from the nation without it hurting very much. Nice, but irrelevant to my point.
This in NO WAY addresses the obvious waste that is the only thing that can be inferred by the tripled spending.
