That rock can serve as a destination for a manned spacecraft that can later be used to either return to the Moon or go to Mars.
Rather than chosing a goal like Mars, why not design a manned spacecraft meant for anywhere in the inner solar system?
The Shuttle is meant to carry payloads and people to space.
The Space Station is meant to keep people in space and have them take advantage of it.
The Spacecraft would be meant to travel away from LEO, within the asteroids belt orbit.
