I recently found a book in Toronto Metro Reference Library, published in 1907, filled with detailed technical & economic information on the production and use of renewable ethanol in motor vehicles. It even contained schematics for the design of fermentation & distillation equipment, and for internal combustion motors that would use ethanol instead of gasoline, and that didn't exist at the time. The most interesting part was the preface which contained the rationale: the prospect of a shortage of oil !!! At the time almost no oil was imported from abroad. That book was literally NINETY-FIVE years old!!! Astonishing. It was so old it was considered antique, and could not be signed out of the library. Unfortunately it was over 600 pages in length, so I couldn't just sit there all day and read it. So now I am aware that even a century ago ethanol was considered the best alternative to gasoline in the event of an oil shortage. And I can't believe how much research I had to do, how much analysis of competing alternatives, before I arrived at that conclusion myself. Then I find out it is old news! LOL.
