"Mad cow disease could have come from outer space.
British scientists have a new theory on the source of BSE or mad cow disease - a comet from outer space. Helen Stoddart reports. Up to now it's been thought the disease was caused by animals being fed the remains of other infected cattle but there's never been absolute proof. Now Professor Chandra Wickramasinghe from Cardiff University in Wales believes it may have arrived by a comet hitting the Earth. He says small particles of bacteria descend through the atmosphere mainly during the winter months. And he claims the practice of English and Welsh farmers moving cattle from field to field during that period could explain why the incidences of BSE were so high. ''
