As for the light levels, one has to be careful when discussing computer renderings and the screen outputs. I'm no expert, but in the real world, the human eye adjusts quite broadly to light levels, and though measured levels at Mars might be quite low, I have little doubt that the eye would perceive the planet as quite bright, much as it is shown in the pictures.
