Definitions
"The environment" used to refer to complex ecological systems of plants, animals, and the conditions that supported them. It now means pretty much any natural physical matter or state of existence, as long as it has not been altered by human action. This is why now we can get claptrap about polluting the lunar "environment" or "polluting deep space."
