STS87 (Kalpana's first flight, which also had lots of tiles damaged) tested the AerCam.

All that needs to be done is to release it from the cargo bay,send the shuttle down a few dozen feet, rotate the Shuttle (roll and yaw) recapture the camera and in a few minutes, the enture surface of the spacecraft has been examined, without the need for an EVA.

Now, if they do find something worrisome, I don't know how much it would have helped.
