I think the only thing that could have been attempted is to launch another shuttle, get it close to Columbia, transfer EVA suits over, (or reuse a couple) and let Columbia 7’s evacuate over to the second shuttle. Then they could try to repair Columbia at this time or a later time, and then some brave soul could attempt to land it if the repairs looked successful.
