March/23/1983. Ronald Reagan announces the SDI project...

20 years ago today, President Ronald Reagan announced the ambitious project known as the "Space Defence Initiative".

Those old enough to remember, like myself, will recall that it's critics disparagingly called it "Star Wars".
The critics said it would never work;
that it would bankrupt America; and
that it would trigger a preemptive
nuclear war.
Well...the critics were wrong on two points, were they wrong on the third?

I know there are professional aerospace engineers on this website. Can you say
20 years later that technology has reached a point where SDI will now work?
Should it ever be resurrected to be used against future adversaries in perhaps another 20 years, like Red China?

In another 20 years, Red China could
have a mix of a 1000 nuke cruise-missiles & ICBMs...not to mention a flotilla or two
of nuclear-powered missile-launching subs.
