For (ICBMs) Inter-Continental Ballisctic Missiles, yes I think it could work.
Their was united opposition to SDI from the elite liberal educational institutions. "Star Wars" was a nice disparaging term which stuck.
With the developments of fields such as high capacity solar cell panels and refined targeting computers, a chain of larger than average satellites could be employed to target ICBMS.
To be sure, the project would require an extensive array of satellites so as to put the firepower in the shortest of all possible arcs, and I assume that there would be a quick turnover in some of the lower satellites as their orbits would not last as long.
This said, the laser technology is pretty much there, the refinement of wireless power transfer is also being developed so that a chain of satellites can be used to put power to any single one of a large group. That will be the crowning achievement of SDI in my opinion, not the targeting or the refined lasers - but the power distribution, storage and management. That will, by necessity, have to be exquisite.
