That would be like the taliban destroying the giant budda statues. China has an extensive recorded history, virtually unbroken for thousands of years. And it looks like they are coming around: some chinese i spoke to recently say it is very free there now, with only token actions by the communist party. They have internet access, cable tv, modern conveniences, and I think the next generation of chinese citizens will be so well-informed that the government will simply not have the leverage to oppress them.
