Well I respectfully disagree with your characterization of Gusev; moreover, so does the majority of the science community. Gusev survived a legitimate scientific and engineering downselect process. The whole purpose in going to Mars is to collect science data and test new hypotheses not to prove we can land safely, which we've already done.
