I've been lucky enough to see the green flash several times from Baja California (whilst camping in the mountains north of Cabo San Lucas), and once, crazily enough, from the Mt. Wilson observatory in California. That one was nutty -- the whole landscape seemed for a moment to be bathed in an emerald sort of laser-light, with a simultaneous clarity and graininess that was absolutely stunning.
As for a squashed moon -- the absolute weirdest I've ever seen was a moonrise over the Anza Borego desert. The moon appeared -- honestly, I'm not making this up -- to be perfectly square. With sharp corners and everything. I actually couldn't figure out what I was looking at, until it rose above an inversion layer after several minutes, and assumed a more respectably moon-like shape.
Cheers,
Nathan.
