Some poll results

Hi, Matt!

Thought you might be interested in these:

A poll of Palestinians published in the Jerusalem Post, June 4, 2001, reports:

76% support suicide attacks
80% don't believe the Israeli cease-fire is serious
36.8% favor the continuation of the peace process
58% believe there will never be peace with Israel
32% are dissatisfied with the Palestinian Authority
18% support Hamas

Polls of Israelis report:

From Ma'ariv, an Israeli newspaper, June 9, 2001:

59% support a cease-fire
58% support the continuation of the peace process
67% are afraid for Israel's future

From Yediot Aharonot, an Israeli newspaper, June 1, 2001:

64% are very pessimistic about political events
51% believe the Intifada will go on for many more years
57% favor a freeze of Israeli settlement-building in Gaza and the West Bank in exchange for a halt to violence.

I got these from a magazine called World Press Review, whose business is gathering press coverage from publications worldwide, except the U.S., translating them to English (when necessary) and publishing them so Americans can see what the rest of the world is saying. This is from the August 2001 issue (p. 11). They have a website, but the searchable content is very slight, as they prefer to sell magazines to stay afloat.

Regards--
Mary Anne
