you aren't being fare about it

do we mandate time off on election days for people to vote now?

Gak! Yes we do; or more properly, the law prevents anyone from interfering with a citizen's right to vote. Imagine if your employer could prevent you from voting if he thought you'd vote the "wrong" way. Employers aren't obligated to pay for the time, but they can't fire or otherwise punish an employee for taking time off to vote. You bet this would be a massive hit on productivity!

hardly. The two biggest lines at the poles were early early in the morning before work, a boost at 2:00 that continues till a boom after 6 p.m. the rest of the time with the exception of lunch hours it was a trickle of people coming in and I sat back reading Orwell.

This tells me people aren't taking time off en masse to vote, they are getting it out of their way before or after work. Besides you completely ignored the absente otpion.

What makes this hard is the commitment and bother to keep up a schedule of repeatedly voting over and over, either through mail, or by going to the poles.

I can't believe that you can't see how erecting such huge barriers to voting would discourage even the most committed working stiff who couldn't afford to take the time, and inevitably select for people with time on their hands. Time costs a working person more than an idle one. You're being awfully cavalier about essentially levying a significant tax on voting.

I would keep voting in it, would you?

however I would prefer a computer system housed at each voting office. that would be easier. Maybe a big touch screen monitor that cycled through the choices.

I thought it wasn't supposed to be easy?

the hard part comes from keeping up the regiment, being determined about who you vote for. Everyone shoudl be able to do this in one way or another, they just need to show they are commited. the part about casting a ballot is not to be hard, the part about doin g over and over agian is.
