Re: Hmm-m . . .

<The aircraft cockpits could have steel-framed doors with bulletproofing to prevent the door being broken down. The door could be opened using at least 15 separate keys inserted simultaneously. This is an example of fool-proofing.

A flight attendant held hostage and tortured just outside that impenetrable door will easily can-x this one, S_M.

However, something to be learned from the local 7-11:
How about a kitchenette and lavatory in the cockpit, and a time-locked cabin door? The terrorist would be able to coerce the pilot to a new destination, but taking control of the craft would be a different matter entirely.

Cameras could be installed on aircraft to allow remote monitoring of any part of the aircraft. Multiple power supplies would prevent power from being cut. Multiple cameras and well-distributed viewing screens would prevent sabotage from going unnoticed. Panic buttons would be within reach of every passenger and every crew member.

Doable.

Pilots would go through the same x-ray machines as the passengers. X-ray machines would be designed to detect not just explosives and guns, but knives as well. Knives could be detected by their geometric cusps (sharp corners & edges), and that suitcase would be searched. Strong algorithms already exist to detect edges in any computer graphic. This should be pursued.

This, I like.

carry-on luggage should not be allowed on aircraft, period. Passenger boredom can be alleviated in other ways.

No.

alcohol should not be served on aircraft.

No.

bomb-proof luggage containers should be used exclusively.

Very yes.

terrorist-proofing should be tested endlessly to see if there is *any* way to get around them, or compromise the safety of the aircraft.

At least as often as the aircraft itself is inspected for wear and tear.

armed guards on every aircraft.

This could prove a hazard to both terrorist and passenger alike, but still a possibility.

I'm just getting started.

Don't stop,
Dan
