Perhaps a specially trained cabin crewmember that is a liaison to the flight crew could do those kind of checks. He should be trained in the technical aspects of the plane so he would be able to describe to the captain what the problem might be, and let the captain make a decision.
Perhaps future airplane designs should incorporate an isolated cockpit concept.
