The Islamic State of Afghanistan Condemns Terrorist Attacks on American Targets
September 12, 2001
Yesterday's attacks on US targets in New York and Washington, which resulted in the death and injury of a large number of Americans, were acts of terror. We strongly condemn these attacks and sympathize with the victims of these cowardly actions.
The people of Afghanistan have also been the target of similar terrorist attacks by extremists. Commander Masood, the legendary freedom fighter, was the target of an assassination attempt by two Arab terrorists affiliated with Usama Bin Laden on September 9. We believe that bin Laden is also behind yesterday's terrorist attacks on America, since in the past he has masterminded attacks on American targets outside the US. Usama bin Laden lives and operates under the protection of the Pakistan-backed extremist regime of the Taliban.
As long as the Pakistan-backed Taliban exert control over some parts of Afghanistan, terrorists will have a safe haven in which to operate. We hope the US response to yesterday's terrorist actions will be aimed at depriving the terrorist organizations of their haven in Afghanistan. This only can be achieved when a truly representative government is established in Afghanistan. US active support for the anti-Taliban forces in Afghanistan is necessary in helping to achieve this objective.

It is our duty to aid these poor people. We must remove the Taliban from Afghanistan -- preferably from the world.
