Hi, Gary--

Why did The Guardian publish the column? Perhaps for balance. There really aren't that many anti-American articles to be had out there at this time, what I read here to the contrary. So, to publish some form of minority opinion, they picked from what little was available. They would have looked for someone British. The column itself is certainly extravagant in its condemnation, and so attracts attention. Grammar and spelling also count.

We have copies of Mein Kampf and Das Kapital on the shelves in the library. Nazis and Communists did not buy them. Balance is important.

The number of remarks critical of America that the folks here find and post serve another purpose, one which The Guardian might also have in mind: whetstones for sharpening tongues. It's good to practice rhetoric before taking it outside.

Regards--
Mary Anne
