Independent and Left-wing are not synonyms

<The Guardian is identified by World Press Review as an independent publication, meaning it takes its news from many sources, and has a wide range of editorial opinions expressed. You may go back to Dan's post and seek out the other OpEd pieces that were listed with Pilger's. Some leftist pieces do not make the whole paper leftist, any more than Jesse Helms speaks for the entire Republican Party.

WPR identifies publications it quotes -- and there are many -- by viewpoint. Among its designations are leftist, rightist, government-owned, liberal, conservative, independent, centrist, communist (only used for press in non-Communist countries), semi-official, ruling-party, and business-oriented (to designate economic focus on general news items). None of the publications quoted in WPR originate in the US, which is the point, though they do include Canadian and Mexican for North American viewpoint.
